Granite Counter FAQs

Answers to some commonly asked granite countertop questions.

How much do granite countertops cost?

There is a lot that factors into the cost of granite countertops. Granite countertops can range anywhere from around $2,000 to $4,500. Granite slabs are often priced at around 50-60$ per square foot.

However, the overall cost of granite depends on where the granite comes from, its color and rarity, as well as the size of the slab you need. You’ll also have to factor in the costs of fabrication and expert installation.

Are granite countertops heat resistant?

Granite countertops are very heat resistant and can handle the heat of hot pots, pans, and dishes. However, it is important to remember that granite does absorb heat, meaning the stone itself can become hot to the touch after contact with hot kitchenware. Although it still isn’t recommended to leave hot cookware directly on your granite countertops, they are naturally quite resistant to heat damage.

Can you use granite as a cutting board?

True granite countertops are incredibly strong and scratch-resistant, meaning using knives directly on the stone to prepare food will not harm your countertops in any way. However, because the stone is so strong and scratch-resistant, doing so will likely ruin your kitchen knives, leaving them very dull and worn.

Can granite crack or chip?

Granite is an incredibly strong and damage-resistant material to use in your home. However, that does not mean it’s completely invincible. With heavy/hard direct impacts, granite countertops can be susceptible to cracks and chips. Although it isn’t likely, it is possible, and because of this, it is recommended to still be reasonably cautious and responsible with the use and care of your granite countertops.

Is granite affected by etching?

Etching is a form of damage caused by acidic chemicals coming in contact with the surface of stone countertops. Because granite is an igneous rock made up of naturally forming minerals and crystals, it can be susceptible to etching damage when exposed to high alkaline chemicals/cleaners. It’s best to avoid using harsh chemicals on your natural stone countertops as they are not necessary to achieve sanitation.

Can granite stain?

Granite countertops that are not properly sealed are susceptible to staining through their exposed porous surface. When properly sealed, granite can be very stain resistant, as long as drips and spills are cleaned up soon after contact with the stone’s surface.

Does granite need to be sealed?

Yes, in order to fully preserve the original color and quality of your granite countertops and to protect them from everyday damages, it is necessary that they be professionally sealed.

Does granite require a lot of maintenance?

No. Once properly installed and sealed by a professional, granite countertops are very easy to clean and care for, requiring very little time and effort.
